How to Clean a Hot Tub Safely

To clean a hot tub, turn off the power, remove and rinse the filter, drain the water, scrub the shell, clean the jets and waterline, flush the plumbing if needed, then refill with fresh water and balance the chemistry. A full drain-and-clean removes body oils, sunscreen, biofilm, scale, and cloudy-water residue that normal sanitizer cannot fully handle.

Do not treat a dirty hot tub like a bathtub. Hot tubs recirculate warm water through filters, pumps, jets, and hidden plumbing lines. If those parts are not cleaned together, the water can turn cloudy or smell bad again soon after refilling.

Before you clean a hot tub

Check your owner’s manual first, especially if your tub has acrylic, vinyl, saltwater, or ozone equipment. Use cleaners labeled for hot tubs or acrylic spas. Household bathroom cleaners can foam, damage surfaces, or interfere with sanitizer.

Plan the cleaning for a day when the weather is mild. Avoid draining a hot tub in freezing weather unless you know how to winterize the plumbing. If your tub has visible grit around the drain or suction area, clean that debris first so it does not settle back onto the shell.

What you need

  • Garden hose
  • Submersible pump or drain valve access
  • Hot tub line flush product, if the water is old or cloudy
  • Non-abrasive spa surface cleaner
  • Soft cloth or non-scratch sponge
  • Small brush for jets and corners
  • Filter cleaning spray or filter soak
  • Fresh test strips or a water test kit
  • Sanitizer and balancing chemicals

How to clean a hot tub step by step

1. Turn off power to the hot tub

Turn the hot tub off at the control panel and breaker before draining or cleaning. Running pumps without enough water can damage the equipment.

2. Remove the filter

Take out the filter cartridge before draining. Rinse it with a hose from top to bottom, spreading the pleats gently so debris washes out. If the filter is greasy, brown, or smells musty, soak it in a filter cleaning solution according to the label.

3. Add line flush before draining if needed

If the water is cloudy, foamy, smelly, or the tub has not been cleaned in months, add a hot tub line flush product before draining. Run the jets for the time listed on the product. This helps loosen biofilm inside the plumbing lines.

For a smaller whirlpool-style bath, use our jetted tub cleaning guide instead. Hot tubs and indoor jetted tubs use similar circulation ideas, but the water care and equipment are different.

4. Drain the hot tub completely

Drain through the built-in valve or use a submersible pump for faster removal. Direct the water to an approved drain area. Do not flood landscaping, patios, or areas where treated water can run into a storm drain.

5. Wipe the waterline and shell

Spray a spa-safe cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe the waterline, seats, footwell, and corners. Body oil and sunscreen usually collect at the waterline first. For acrylic or fiberglass surfaces, avoid abrasive powders and rough pads. If the shell has staining, the gentle methods in our fiberglass tub cleaning guide are safer than harsh scrubbing.

6. Clean around jets and suction covers

Use a small brush around jet faces, suction covers, and tight corners. Do not remove covers unless the manual says they are user-removable. Rinse loosened residue toward the drain or vacuum it out with a wet-dry vacuum.

7. Rinse the shell

Rinse the inside of the tub with clean water. Drain or vacuum the rinse water so cleaner residue does not foam after refilling.

8. Reinstall the filter and refill

Put the clean filter back in place unless the manual says to refill first. Refill through the filter well if recommended, because that can help reduce air locks in the plumbing.

9. Restore power and balance the water

Turn power back on only after the water is above the jets and intake area. Test alkalinity, pH, sanitizer, and hardness. Balance the water before soaking. Clean water that is not balanced can still damage equipment or irritate skin.

How often to clean a hot tub

Drain and deep clean most hot tubs every 3 to 4 months. Heavy use, cloudy water, strong odor, foam, or visible buildup means you should clean sooner.

  • Rinse the filter every 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Deep clean the filter monthly if the tub is used often.
  • Wipe the waterline weekly.
  • Test water 2 to 3 times per week.
  • Replace the filter when rinsing no longer restores flow.

What not to use when cleaning a hot tub

  • Regular dish soap, which creates foam and residue
  • Bleach mixed with any other cleaner or spa chemical
  • Abrasive scrub pads on acrylic shells
  • Household glass cleaner inside the tub
  • Pressure washers near jets, seals, or controls
  • Boiling water on the shell or plumbing parts

If you use bleach for nearby bathroom surfaces, keep it away from spa chemicals and never mix products. The same safety rule applies in our bathtub bleach cleaning guide: use one cleaner at a time and rinse well.

Why a hot tub still looks dirty after refilling

If the water turns cloudy soon after refilling, the problem is usually one of four things: dirty plumbing lines, a clogged filter, leftover cleaner residue, or unbalanced water chemistry.

Run a line flush before the next drain if flakes or slime return. Replace the filter if it is old, stiff, torn, or still looks dirty after soaking. If the shell itself has stains, treat the surface separately with a non-abrasive cleaner. For tub surface marks, our tough bathtub stains guide can help you choose a safer surface method.

Frequently asked questions about cleaning hot tubs

How often should I drain and clean a hot tub?

Most hot tubs should be drained and deep cleaned every 3 to 4 months. Clean sooner if the water smells bad, foams, looks cloudy, or has visible buildup around the waterline.

Can I clean a hot tub with bleach?

Do not use bleach as a general hot tub cleaner unless your manufacturer specifically allows it. Bleach can damage surfaces or conflict with spa chemicals if used incorrectly.

Should I clean the filter before or after draining?

Remove and rinse the filter before draining. Deep clean or soak it while the tub is empty, then reinstall it before refilling if your manual recommends that order.

Why does my hot tub smell after cleaning?

A smell after cleaning usually means biofilm remains in the plumbing, the filter is still dirty, or the water is not balanced. Use a line flush before the next drain and test the water after refilling.

A clean hot tub needs clean water, clean surfaces, and clean equipment

The best way to clean a hot tub is to treat the whole system: filter, plumbing lines, shell, jets, and refill water. Once those parts are cleaned together, the water stays clearer longer and the tub is easier to maintain between full drains.
